What are Fitzpatrick skin phototypes

The Fitzpatrick skin phototype is a classification system that categorizes skin based on its reaction to sun exposure. It helps determine how likely skin is to burn or tan, and is used to assess individual risk of sun-related damage. The scale ranges from Type I (very light, always burns) to Type VI (very dark, never burns), with each type having distinct characteristics regarding sun sensitivity and tanning ability.

Skin Type II – Fair

Fair skin that burns easily and tans only slightly. Regular, high-level sun protection is especially important.

Skin Type III – Light to Medium

Light to medium skin that may burn at first but gradually develops a tan. Sun damage can still occur, even without visible sunburn.

Skin Type IV – Medium to Olive

Medium or olive-toned skin that rarely burns and tans easily. Daily sun protection remains essential for preventing long-term UV damage.

Skin Type V – Brown

Brown skin that very rarely burns and tans deeply. Although naturally more protected by melanin, it is still vulnerable to sun damage and skin cancer.

Skin Type VI – Deeply Pigmented

Deep brown to black skin that typically does not burn and tans easily. UV damage and skin cancer are less common but can still occur and may be harder to detect.
